Conventions of a Psychological Thriller

Alfred Hitchcock knows as "The Master of suspence" creating films using the Freudian concepts within his work in films such as Rebecca, Psycho, Vertigo etc.

Other Screenwriters and Directors known for the psychological thriller category are; Brad Anderson well known in this genre with films such as 'The Machinist'. David Cronenberg, a director who focuses on horrors of our minds. Mary Harron, directed 'American Psycho'. Martin Scorsese, directing films such as 'Shutter Island'.

Example of narration we are looking for - The Lovely Bones

I found this clip on YouTube of the Lovely Bones to hear how ghostly her voice sounds as it echoes in and out of the story to help the audience understand what exactly happened to her while also adds the haunting effect to the film. This is a good technique to fit into our film and we would be able to do this.
Relevence of Genre
"Psychological thriller is a specific sub-genre of the broad ranged thriller with heavy focus on characters. However, it often incorporates elements from the mystery and drama genre, along with the typical traits of the thriller genre. In addition to drama and mystery, many psychological thrillers contain elements of, and often overlap with, the horror genre, particulary psychological horror."

The film we are creating fits into the psychological thriller category as one of the main characters is troubled greatly by an obsessive psychological problem, stalking young women over the internet. Some of the horror that the film will contain won't be visual creating a suspense that will allow the audience to make their own assumptions. The sene of mystery will be created through the linking of the victims on the social network site. Overall the film will have an underlying feeling of horror linked with the psychological problems presented.

Research into The Lovely Bones

14-year-old girl in suburban 1970's Pennsylvania is murdered by her neighbor. She tells the story from the place between Heaven and Earth, showing the lives of the people around her and how they have changed all while attempting to get someone to find her lost body. The film is Rated PG-13 for mature thematic material involving disturbing violent content and images, and some language

While researching this film i found that Lovely Bones has an interesting, chilling beginning. The 14-year-old girl narrates the film of how she died. This inspired me to add this to our film as it is a different way to add an unsettling atmosphere to the film without the stereotypical way of darkness, blood and death.

The certificate that will be used for our film is a 15. This has been chosen due to the film containing strong violence and dangerous behaviour but the violence will not be excessive and will not dwell on the infliction of pain. Also the film will reflect aspects of horror but will not be explicit to fit a 15 certificate.
